One key focus I plan to discuss in 2026 are generational patterns. As the Boomers age our society is going to experience a massive re-shaping across age lines. This will have a monumental impact on our churches and how we advance the kingdom. For now I would like to do a short series on the differences between Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
In this post we will focus on Gen Z and in the next post we will focus on Gen Alpha.

For Starters:
Values shift as generations age, so today’s traits are not permanent. Useful for understanding patterns — not for stereotyping individuals.
2010 marked the launch of the iPad and Instagram. Gen Alpha is often called the “iPad,” “Screen,” or “Glass” generation.
Cultural and technological conditions for kids born post-2010 are meaningfully different.
What is Generation Z?
Born: 1997–2012
Age in 2026: 14–29
Core Traits
True digital natives (but not AI natives)
Grew up alongside evolving tech, not fully saturated from birth
Most diverse generation in U.S. history
Pragmatic and cautious financially (shaped by the 2008 recession)
Highly socially conscious
Open about mental health, but also report high anxiety and loneliness
Defining Events
Rise of smartphones and social media
The Great Recession
COVID-19 disrupting education and early careers
Major social milestones (Obama presidency, marriage equality)
Gen Z in 2026
~27–30% of the workforce
Redefining work norms:
Hybrid/remote expectations
Mental health support
Purpose-driven employers
Less loyal to traditional career ladders
How are we relating to Generation Z?
As a Marriage and Family Therapist I approach this generation totally different than my generation (X) or the Boomers (1946-1964). They are different, and that's okay. Sometimes the "back in my day" comments are used to share history, and sometimes they are used to judge. Our day was different and in some ways I liked it better. However, it probably wasn't better, but different.
.
There are many takeaways from the data mentioned above. Some of us have children in this age range and have a first-hand knowledge what it's like to support them in current times.
Question: How do you personally relate to Gen Z?
Please share your perspective about this beloved and precious generation!
Kyle
